Born in Seville, SpainLives and works in London, UKIn Jose Gomez’s recent paintings, he blends the abstract and figurative, creating works that call for a shared artist-viewer input. His cultural identity as a southern Spaniard is a significant inspiration, as well as observations from a life lived as a pleasure-seeking Londoner.

Mixed-media artist Jose Gomez completed a degree in Sculpture at Camberwell College of Arts (UAL) in 2012. His work has been featured in several group exhibitions in London including Flesh at Espacio Gallery, Beyond Margins at Menier Gallery and Tribe17 at the Bargehouse, OXO Tower.

Who is your shero and why?My Shero is Carla Antonelli, actress, model, feminist, activist for social equality and advocate for women’s and LGBT rights. She has been a life-long activist and was the first trans person in Spain to be elected to a parliamentary regional level position.

How does the work you are presenting exemplify the theme of ‘sheroes’?I am exhibiting a portrait of Carla Antonelli with a classic comic ‘supershero’ twist. Carla reflects women’s visibility and freedom in contemporary society: this brave trans woman is a heroine of our time and history and deserves to be recognised as such.
