In this collection of works from various projects I explore women across generations and places as holders of complex spaces capable of bridging nurture and rupture. The pieces often stem from my own mixed heritage and work to reconnect with the birthplaces of my maternal grandparents, on the island of St Helena and District 6, South Africa. During a residency to St Helena island in 2023 I was struck by meeting women on the island, strong matriarchs with a sense of self as fierce as their sense of humour. Ooh Luvie, Violet’s corner and Now I can be the Cowboy are odes to these women who hold space for warmth and anger, humour and resilience all at once.
The family tree series looks at the intersectionality between generations, collaging family archives to show how we are formed by many identities and lifetimes.
Yawning or Screaming is an ongoing series looking at visual metaphors for our current global state which seems to sit between outrage and apathy. Often these images show women erupting as a symbol of destruction leading to change.
