The artwork ‘Everywoman’ focuses on and explores the concept of forgotten stories of women from the past and present. It is an experiential, narrative environment involving a dress. The concept of a dress under which you can hide or emerge touches on the idea of the stability and safety provided by a mother, a sacred being, a life giver, and, sadly, often the other, the second sex, the lesser. ‘Everywoman’ reinstates the primal power of a woman and the security she offers. A safe place under the dress gives you time to reflect, study, and enter a timeless space, remembering long-forgotten stories and everyday women’s lives that matter. A dress hangs suspended from the ceiling. Inside, a woman’s vital organs are attached to the lining, hanging at various heights. Each organ contains embroidered sentences that suggest what the wearer has been through, creating a forensic map of everywoman’s life. You will find messages indicating and forming a record of universal human experiences and emotions through personal testament.
TAKE PART: One to three viewers at a time: enter the lit dress and add your feelings or thoughts to notes suspended from the embroidered organs. Your contribution grows the evolving narrative.
